Arnold Böcklin The play of the waves, 1883.
In his essay on Böcklin published in the May 1920 issue of Il Convegno (Milan) De Chirico wrote, "The Play of the Waves, the largest canvas painted by Böcklin, recalls some of the fragements of Pompeian painting, and is full of the same feelin of dryness and flatness as the Aldobrandine Wedding, which was also admired and copied by Poussin.
