Casa di Orfeo, Pompeii - copy of a wall-painting depicting Orpheus sitting in front of a cave enchanting the animals with the sound of his lyre.
Either side of Orpheus are two rectangular openings, the top edges and sides of which are framed by jagged stones signifying the mythical cave-like entrance to Elysium (paradise). The curtains in (fig.1) are stylised versions of the jagged stones and in this instance lead to the sanctuary of Apollo. His symbols, the tripod, omphalos and griffin, are visible just below the bottom of the curtain located above the central mask.
Fig 2 depicts a similar jagged stone motif that appears all round the upper edge of a wall-painting depicting a paradise garden in the Villa di Livia Drusilla-Augusto, located near Rome at Prima Porta.
