In conversation with the American painter Will Barnet in 2006, I was informed by him that SKIRA illustrations, such as the one above, had a profound effect on the development of American abstract art. His own work took a more figurative direction after visiting Pompeii and seeing the Dionysiac frieze in the Villa of the Mysteries. An image from this wall-painting is featured on the cover of the SKIRA publication on Roman Painting (see illustration left).
